Prepositions are connecting words that join elements of the sentence together. The Spanish preposition a is used in several different situations, and we will look at when these are!
When to use Spanish preposition: a
To indicate an action directed at a person, animal or object.
– Encuentro a mis amigos (I meet my friends)
To indicate a direction.
– Lucas camina a la playa (Lucas walks to the beach)
After verbs of movement (e.g. venir, ir, volver) when the word that follows the verb is a name or pronoun.
– Vamos a Guatemala (We go to Guatemala)
Contractions
– a + el = al
– Vamos al cine (We go to the cinema)
