With the World Cup underway and a strong presence of Latin American teams as well as the current world champions being Spain it might be useful to know certain phrases and words related to football.

World Cup- La Copa Mundial
Player- El jugador
Goalkeeper – El/la portero/a
Defender- el defensa (referring to the whole defense is la defensa)
Midfielder- el centrocampista
Winger- El extremo
Forward- el delantero
Referee- El árbitro
Linesman- El juez de linea
Manager/Coach- El técnico/entrenador
Pitch- El campo/la cancha
Goal area- La portería
Midfield- El centro del campo
Sideline- La banda
Corner flag- El banderín de esquina
Penalty spot- Punto penal
Centre circle- círculo central
Ball- La pelota
Post- El palo/poste
Match- El partido
First half- El primer tiempo
Second half- El segundo tiempo
Half time- El entretiempo
To score- Meter un gol
Pass- El pase
Own goal- Autogol
Kick-off- El saque de centro
Corner kick- El saque de esquina
Free-kick- El saque de falta
Throw-in- El saque de banda
Penalty- El penalti
Red card- La tarjeta roja
Yellow card- La tarjeta amarilla
What is the score? – ¿cómo va el marcador?
What was the score?- ¿cómo terminó el partido?
Show him a yellow card – Píntalo de amarillo (literraly means “paint him yellow)
Send him off! – ¡A la calle!
“They played like never before, they lost as usual”- “Jugaron como nunca, perdieron como siempre”
Shoot! – ¡Patea!
Handball! – ¡Mano!
Goal! – ¡Gol!
Goal poacher- Cazgoles
Bicycle kick- Chilena
Nutmeg- Túnel
He dived! – ¡Se ha tirado!
Great tackle! – ¡Buena entrada!
Foul! – ¡Falta!
That was brilliant! – ¡Genial!
Good game! – ¡Partidazo!
