Healthcare in Guatemala

Guatemala is an incredibly beautiful and diverse country but faces deep poverty. It has the 4th highest rate of malnutrition in the world and one of the highest infant mortality rates. Major causes of death include treatable conditions, such as diarrohea, pneumonia and malnutrition. The health system has been eroded by a lack of government funding, leaving hospitals and clinics without essential supplies. This has particularly affected rural Maya indigenous families, where often healthcare is beyond their means.

Volunteering in Guatemala

Volunteer with our partner-charity Asociación Fatima, established for over 30 years, providing healthcare assistance to local communities in the Quetzaltenango region. Volunteers have the opportunity to carry out a range of medical procedures, disease screening and dispensing of supplies.

There are also projects focusing on health education, such as teaching communities on how to get the maximum nutritional value from available food. The charity aims to transform the lives of local communities through education.

A wide range of backgrounds are accepted including doctors, nurses, dentists, nutritionists and project managers.

How it works

Our placement advisors work to understand your unique goals and skills and match you with volunteer projects ranging from 2 weeks to 6 months. Project start dates are flexible.

Since Guatemala is a Spanish-speaking country, pre-departure Spanish lessons are included. Lessons are taken online with experienced Spanish tutors from our school, Spanish Marks. Flexible lesson scheduling.
