Mary’s Experience in Teaching Local Children

I had an incredible time with Spanish Marks! My journey began with the amazing Rustom, who went out of his way to ensure I made the most of my experience. He shared a wealth of knowledge and insight, and he took the time to show me around the beautiful city of Guatemala. It honestly felt like having my own personal travel consultant.

From helping me purchase medication to arranging tours and introducing me to my homestay family and work placement, nothing was too much to ask. He was always willing to assist with everything—from recommending a two-day volcano hike to visiting Mayan ruins. This was my first solo trip, and he truly ensured that everything ran smoothly for me. He even made sure I had activities planned for the weekend, including on his day off!

My work placement was, by far, the highlight of my experience. I had the opportunity to teach two after-school English classes. The students were so eager to learn, incredibly smart, and respectful. Serving them lunch after the classes was just as rewarding. This experience taught me so much about myself and has truly changed me for the better. My entire outlook on life has been shaped by what Guatemala has taught me.
